Public lecture – „Kann Quantencomputing einen Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung leisten?“

MQV member Prof. Dr. Michael Hartmann from the Chair of Theoretical Physics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg gives an insight into the current state of development of quantum computers and sheds light on the question if and when quantum computing can contribute to sustainable development.

The computing power of quantum computers exceeds that of current technology many times over. However, the development of these computers is only just beginning. The first applications of quantum computers are expected in the simulation of materials and chemical processes as well as in the calculation of optimization problems. If it is possible to efficiently use the enormous computing power of quantum computers for these applications, this technology can thus help us to manage and live more sustainably.

This talk – held in German – will provide insight into the current state of quantum computing development and, in this context, shed light on the question of whether and when quantum computing can contribute to sustainable development.

Michael J. Hartmann was appointed to the Chair of Theoretical Physics in 2019. In his research, the physicist focuses primarily on quantum physics. He is a member of the lighthouse project "Quantum Measurement and Control for the Enablement of Quantum Computing and Quantum Sensing (QuMeCo)" and the Munich Quantum Valley.

Among other things, Prof. Hartmann has been involved in the development of the Google quantum computer "Sycamore".

The event will take place 10 Nov 2022, 6pm both at Emmy-Noether-Hörsaal H12, Cauerstr. 11 in Erlangen and online.
